Central nervous system (cns): brain & spinal cord. Peripheral nervous system: 12 pairs of cranial nerves, 1 pairs of spinal nerves & all the branches. Motor (efferent) message from cns to muscles & glands autonomic message govern internal organs & blood vessels. Separate in 2 hemispheres (left is dominant in 95%, right-handed people) Automatic or reactive speech: greetings, swearing and exclamations easy but purposeful speech difficult. Spontaneous speech: ask open-ended question, show picture and assess fluent or non-fluent. Ex: aphasia in r handed individual almost always indicated l hemisphere pathology. Control automatic associated movements: arm swinging alternating with leg movement (gait) Sensory pathways of the spinal cord and brain stem for synapses on their way to the cerebral cortex. Vital functions: temperature, heart rate, bp, sleep center, pituitary gland regulator, coordination of autonomic nervous system, activity and emotional status. Spinal cord: (long cord from medulla to l1-l2) Millions of sensory receptors in the skin, mucous membranes, muscles/tendons and viscera.
