Motivation: factors initiation/direction/persistence of behaviour: factor or motivational state that prompts behavior | an intervening variable, goal(s) towards which the behavior is directed | ex. dry mouth/salty food = thirst, reasons for differences in intensity of the behavior. Sources: biological/emotional/cognitive/social factors (they can overlap, ex. emo/social)- Body mass index (bmi): numerical index calculated for a person"s weight & weight; used to indicate heath status and disease risk. Basal metabolic rate: min energy needed to keep an awake/resting body alive. Anorexia nervosa: potentially life-threatening eating disorder where an intense fear of becoming fat leads to self-starvation & weight loss accompanied with strong belief that one is fat despite objective evidence. Bulimia nervosa: eating disorder in which victim gorges & purges the stomach by induced vomiting. Sex: pheromones: chemical odors emitted by animals that appear to influence behavior of members of same species. Four phases of sexual intercourse (william masters & virginia johnson) 1)excitement: sexual arousal, bp, heart rate & respiration increase.
