17 views2 pages

Document Summary

Tobacco and alcohol use, and exercise and diet patters, account for more than one-third of all. American deaths: usually by triggering the onset of cancer and cardiovascular disease. Richard ryan studied an alcohol treatment program while williams studied a weight-loss program. Williams, deci, and ryan developed a treatment self-regulation questionnaire which asks participants questions about why they were entering a dieting or smoking cessation program. They were interested in how autonomous or self-determined the patient was: the questions were about external factors, introjection factors, or autonomous factors for which the person decided to enter the program. It was only when someone fully endorsed change, when it was a deep personal choice to change, that they will behave autonomously and have a higher probability in being successful in changing. Abusing alcohol, smoking, and overeating all provide an escape from pressures or provide some sort of comfort.
