Social control: regulation and enforcement of social norms. Social order: arrangement of practices and behaviors on which society"s members base their daily lives. Sanctions: means of enforcing rules, can be both positive and negative (rewards/punishments) Informal sanctions: emerge in face-to-face interactions (disapproving looks, comments) Formal sanctions: ways to officially recognize and enforce norm violations, establish rules to punish (legal, mcgill administration, family) Only few universally deviant behaviours since norms vary from place to place. Social control: internal & external sanctions push people to act in socially acceptable ways.
