In order to communicate the various elements that go into a research study, it is necessary to discuss the process as a series of stops or phases. The steps involved in conducting research are independent. The phases of social research are highly interconnected. Just as certain procedures are too impractical to use, others are ethically prohibitive or politically different or impossible. The problem with ethical considerations is that some are not always self-evident. Ethical considerations in research aren"t always apparent to us. As a result we often do things without seeing ethical issues that may be apparent to others and may even be obvious to us when pointed out. A study that torchers small kids is unethical. Concern with ethical standards and guidelines in research gained momentum in north america in the second half of the 20th century. Examined the long term consequences of untreated syphilis that ran until 1972. The sample was made up entirely of black males.
