SOCI 388 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Feedback, Informed Consent, Participant Observation
Document Summary
What is crime: four definitional perspectives, legalistic, political, sociological, psychological. Crime and deviance: most crimes can be regarded as deviant forms of behaviour, deviant behaviour is human activity that violates social norms, some forms of deviance are not criminal, and the reverse is equally true. What should be criminal: the consensus perspective, the pluralist perspective, the conflict perspective, each sees the relationship between the law and the social order somewhat differently. The evolving science of criminology: present-day criminology is decidedly more scientific than its predecessor - it is amenable to objective scrutiny and systematic testing, page 16 - 17. The role of research and experimentation: theories must be tested, research can be defined as the use of standardized, systematic procedures in the search for knowledge. Look at terminology section: applied research, pure research, non-applied research, primary research, secondary research. Problem identification --> development of a research design --> choice of data-gathering techniques --> review of findings.
