BIOLOGY 3UU3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Nitrogen Fixation, Oxidative Phosphorylation, Phase Transition
Document Summary
Metabolic cycles as an underlying basis of biological oscillations. By: benjamin p. tu and steven l. mcknight. Discusses the concept of temporal compartmentalization of metabolism that takes place during circadian rhythm, hibernation and sleep-wake cycle, and suggests that cyclic changes in a cell"s metabolic state might be a fundamental driving force for such biological oscillations. Metabolic programmes can be tuned by temporal compartmentalization allowing particular metabolic processes to be executed during distinct temporal windows: allows distinct biochemical reactions to be carried out under optimal conditions. Assuming that the metabolic state of a cell is dynamic, fluctuating levels of metabolites may be responsible for the establishment of the cycle. Cell division initiates during r/b (oxygen consumption is minimal), but not during the ox respiratory phase (oxygen consumption is maximal) Limit-cycle oscillator model: is a model of variable period length that depends on environmental conditions.
