Misconceptions about listening (1) listening and hearing are not the same thing. Faulty listening behaviours: we have habits that keep us from understanding important messages (1) pseudo listening. Reasons for poor listening (1) effort: listening effectively is hard, manage: prepare yourself for the task. Introduced a new set of challenges - someone"s who"s constantly engrossed with their tablet/smartphone: manage: be as respectable as we can. 3: concerned with creating and maintaining positive relationships, tune into other"s moods, respond to feelings and ideas, less judgmental about what others say. Dr. terry flynn: record only key ideas, develop a note-taking format. Judge the quality or accuracy of the speaker"s remarks (1) listen for information before evaluating: premature judgements is strong when the idea conflicts our own beliefs (2) evaluate the credibility. People who have personal stake/opinion are biased (3) examine the speaker"s evidence and reasoning. Most of the time old evidence is useless. One or two can support but it isn"t conclusive.
