Andesite: 1-3 vei, low, vulcanian type: moderate to high water content, moderate to high viscosity (basalt to rhyolite, 2-5 vei, high, plinian type: high water content, high viscosity (andesite to rhyolite, 3-8 vei, very high. Located at the edge of the north american plate. Water vapour was the source of gas which made the eruption more explosive. Came primarily from the ocean, but some was in the magma. Hawaiian lava both basalt lava: pahoehoe: smooth ropey flows, aa: tumbles down in very thick flow, bumpy in appearance, looks like rock. Hot spot in the middle of a plate. Big island is over a hotspot feeding magma, up to 5 main volcanoes at the surface. Basalt rocks and peaceful eruptions, no large clouds of ash. Will still burn everything in its path, most damages to property. Rocks must be broken to get magma to the surface. Seismographs can be important warning tools used during evacuations.
