Chapter 4
Age Dependency Ratio: Ratio of the economically dependent sector of the population, to the productive
sector, arbitrarily defined as the ratio of the elderly (65+) plus the young (under 15) to the population of
the working age (15-64); old age dependency ratio is similar except it focuses on those over 64.
Demography: The scientific study of human populations, including their size, composition, distribution,
density, growth, and related socio-economic characteristics.
Population Density: The total number of people in a geographic area divided by the land area;
population per unit of land area.
Population Distribution: The dispersal of a population in a geographic area.
Ecumene: The portion of the land that is settled.
Resource Town: An urban place where a single economic activity focuses on resource extracting (i.e.
mining, logging, oil drilling) dominates the local economy. Single industry town. Also, a company town
built near an isolated mine site to house the mine workers and their families.
Regional Service Centres: Urban places where economic functions are provided to residents living
within the surrounding area.
Native Settlements: Small aboriginal centres, often found on reserves or in remote, northern locations.
Census Metropolitan Area (CMA): An urban area with a population of at least 100 000 together with
adjacent smaller urban centres and even rural areas that have a high degree of economic and social
integration with the larger urban area.
Population Increase: The total population increase resulting from the interaction of births, deaths, and
migration in a population in a given period of time.
Population Growth: The rate at which a population is increasing or decreasing in a given period due to
natural increase and net migration; often expressed as a percentage of the original or base population.
Rate of Natural Increase: The surplus (or deficit) of births over deaths in a population per 1000 people
in a given time period.
Crude Birth Rate (CBR): The number of births per 1000 people in a given year.
Crude Death Rate (CDR): The number of deaths per 1000 people in a given year.
Net Migration: The net effect of immigration and emigration on a country’s population in a given
period.
Push-Pull Model: One of the laws of migration, as devised by Ravenstein, whereby certain neg factors
(i.e. lack od employment opportunities or human security) in the migrant’s present location push
him/her to migrate, just as certain pos factors (i.e. economic opportunities, more amenable climate, or
greater human security) in the location of destination pull the migrant to relocate.
