Document Summary

Mental health is defined as a state of successful performance of mental function, resulting in productive activities, fulfilling relationships with other people, and the ability to adapt to change and to cope with adversity . Mental illness, on the other hand, is the term used to refer collectively to all diagnosable mental disorders. Mental disorders are health conditions that are characterized by alterations in thinking, mood, or behavior (or some combination thereof) associated with distress and/or impaired functioning . In other words, a person with mental health problems may display some signs or symptoms of a mental illness. For example, anxiety or depression, but would not be considered sufficiently ill to receive a diagnosis of a particular mental disorder. Conceptualize the relationship as a continuum, with mental health at one end and mental illness on the other. In such a conceptualization, mental health problems would occur somewhere between the two endpoints, but nearer the mental illness end.
