Intense fear / discomfort associated with physical and mental symptoms like sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea, fear of dying or loss of emotional control. Urge to escape/run away, often results in seeking emergency help. Twice as common in women as in men. Severe, pervasive anxiety when in situations perceived to be difficult to escape from or complete avoidance of certain situations. Agoraphobia often seen after onset of panic disorder. Very noticeable and persistent fear, often excessive/disproportionate, invoked by expected or actual presence of object or situation. Variety of physical symptoms eg. heart palpitations, sweat, trembling, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea, discomfort. > twice as common in women as in men. Persistent anxiety in social situatons eg. public speaking. Possibility of embarrassment or ridicule is crucial factor. Individual is scared people will notice their anxiety symptoms like sweating. Anticipatory anxiety days or weeks prior to feared event.
