Reading 7 - bentham, classical hedonism and nozick,the experience machine. He argues that pleasure is the only intrinsic value and pain is the only intrinsic evil: all others goods and evils derive from these two qualities. Moral rightness / wrongness defined in terms of his hedonistic calculus (according to their consequences in producing pleasure / pain) Nature has placed us under the governance of pain and pleasure: these determine what we ought and ought not to do, sets out standards of right and wrong, as well as the chain of causes and effects. Principle of utility recognizes this: this principle is meant that the principle which approves or disapproves of every action is in accordance of what has augmented or diminished the happiness of the party in interest.
