Document Summary

Retrieval paths have a starting point and ending point. But what of you want to reach the ending point form somewhere other than the starting point. Godden and baddeley (1975): experiment: asked scuba divers to learn various materials. Some learned underwater and some learned on dry land. They were later tested half on dry land and half underwater. the environement underwater is different it"s cold, this will make the diver think cold related thoughts during the learning episode. Thus the diver will form some sort of memory connections between these thoughts and the materials he"s learning. If he is tested underwater the cold may trigger cold related thoughts and because of these connections the thoughts will trigger the target memories. On land the cold related thoughts are not triggered and so there will be no benefit from the connections that are now in place. But he may have some other memory connections that may lead to the target memories.
