Document Summary

Created the foundations of classical conditioning in the 1890"s and1900"s. Interested in the stages of digestion, which began with salivation in the mouth as food was first ingested. Found that dogs would begin to salivate even before any food reached their mouth. Early step in the process of digestion was triggered before food stimulus arrived. The sound of a metronome signaled to a dog that food was ready. Prior to the training, the sound of the metronome had no effect on the dog. After training, a dog would begin salivating in response to the sound of the metronome. This new behaviour was called a conditional reflex, because it was conditional upon training. Contingent relationship: the presentation of one stimulus leads to the presentation of another. When an organism learns the associationg between a signal and an event, we say that a contingent relationship has formed between the 2 stimuli.
