PSYCH 1XX3 Chapter Notes - Chapter Development: Zygosity, Zygote, Phenotype
Document Summary
Genes and environment interact to shape who we become. Each parent can produce millions of genetically distinct offspring (more than 8 million diff. genetic combinations: each couple , 64 trillion possibilities, an exception: twins. Twins: there exists two types: monozygotic, genetically identical, same sperm and ovum, dizygotic twins, share 50% of genes (same amount of genes shared by any two siblings), Males determine the sex of their child different sperm and ovum: female carries two x (will always pass on an x, male has x and y (can pass on either, x+x = female, x+y = male. Phenotype: the expression of an individual"s genotype in terms of observable characteristics. Genotypes can express into different forms of phenotypes: ex: siblings with the same parents may have different eye colors. There exists four main patterns of genetic expression: simple dominant-recessive inheritance. Expression of a trait is determined by a single pair of genes called alleles.
