PSYCH 1XX3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Sexual Jealousy, Genetic Drift, Heritability
Document Summary
Evolution- change in the population gene frequencies over generations. Adaptions- biological traits that help an individual survive and reproduce in its habitat. Evolve through natural selection and emerge from activation of genes. Advantageous in the environment it is development in, not necessarily all environments. Phylogeny- a method for understanding evolution by tracing patterns of divergence of a species over time. Made by: similarities in early development and similarities in dna sequences. Natural selection- differential survival and reproduction of organisms as a result of heritable differences. Basic mechanisms of evolution: natural selection, mutation, genetic drift, migration. Individual difference: variation for any given characteristic amongst: differential reproduction: individual differences affect person"s chances of survival and reproduction, heritability: individual differences are heritable and the offspring of the successful adults will posses same. Over generations, there"s a selective transmission of successful traits until entire population has successful characteristics trait. Stabilizing selection- keeps traits stable over generations, that promotes survival of the species.
