Document Summary

When you are learning, you"re making connections between the newly acquired material and other representations already in your memory. State-dependent learning: the phenomenon through which memory retrieval is most efficient when an individual is in the same state of consciousness as they were when the memory was formed. Scuba divers learned material either on dry land or while under the water and were subsequently tested on the material either in the same state they learned it or not (wet or dry). Divers who learned material under water were most successful when tested underwater, and divers who learned material on land were most successful when tested on land. Memory is best if the olfactory environment is the same during memory retrieval as it was during the initial learning. Students who learned material in a noisy room were most successful when tested in a noisy room, and those who learned in a quiet area were most successful when testing area was quiet.
