Islam and the west: roots of conflict, cooperation, and confrontation: reinforcing differences has polarized not united judeo-christians and muslims, both have contributed to this. The origins and nature of islam: judaism, christianity, and islam are considered the three abrahamic religions because they trace their origins back to the same initial prophet, abraham, they differ in "lineage" The jewish torah captures the revelations before jesus. The christian new testament captures the revelation from jesus. The islamic qur"an embodies the revelation from muhammad: the bible is viewed (by muslims) as flawed which is why muhammad was sent. Assigned reading: 622 - on invitation, he moves to medina to be arbitrator. The islamic community: hijra - the emigration from mecca to medina of utmost importance, beginning of the muslim community, first year of islamic calendar, tribal kinship superseded by the ummah. Community bound by religious belief: muhammad leader of the community and the prophet, political and spiritual leader.
