WOMENST 1A03 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Intersectionality, Sham Marriage, Identity Politics
Document Summary
Mapping the margins: intersectionality, identity politic and violence against women of colour by kimberle. Women have organized against violence that shapes their lives. E. g. battering and rape are now seen as part of a broad-scale system of domination that affects women as a class instead of private matters. Identity-based politics has been a source of strength for people of colour, people of the lgbtq+ community, and others. Race, gender and other identity categories are often treated as negative frameworks and are marginalized. The violence that many women experience is shaped by other dimensions of their identities. Contemporary feminist and antiracist discourses have failed to consider intersectional identities. Women of colour (woc) are often the product of intersecting patterns of racism and sexism. Many women who seek help in battered women"s shelters are unemployed or underemployed. The shelters providing care must not only acknowledge the abuse, but the other forms of domination the women have suffered from.
