Document Summary

Lustig how and why did the guerrilla girls alter the art world establishment in nyc, 1985- During the 1970s the women"s art movement helped women artists create and exhibit their work, however in the early 80"s collector"s desires shifted to more portable work- which was largely created by young white males. This in turn left an incredible lack of both women and non-white people to be unrepresented in the art world. Guerrilla girls worked to fight against this- using humour as their main way to convey a message, and also show feminists can be humorous. They wore gorilla masks so that the focus was on the issues at hand rather than on their personalities. Throughout the 80"s they created black and white posters that pointed out the underrepresentation of women and non-whites in the art world. They would list museums in nyc that had fewer than 10% of female art, and make a point to point-out privilege.
