Women are under-represented in terms of criminal offences but are disproportionately over-represented in terms of being victims in particular crimes (ex. abuse) Crime is clearly a gendered social problem and it is consistently the strongest predictor of criminal involvement = dekeserdy. Sex = biological and genetic differences (reproductive abilities: 2x chromosomes in females, 1x 1y in men. Gender = social identity and role that is determined by how a culture defines femininity and masculinity: social constructed notion, gender binary = distinct roles for each gender. Ex. certain religious groups identify the respective roles for men and women. Gender spheres = work, school, recreational areas that are dominated by one gender or the other: ex. Female-dominated occupations have a helping focus (not as well paid) Women"s gender spheres : medical/dental assistants, nursing, clerical, secretarial, childcare, retail, elementary school teachers.
