Document Summary

Week 7 chapter 4. 2 & 14 dna and the gene: synthesis and repair. Describe the experiments that established that dna is the hereditary material. Explain why the base pairing rules suggest a way for dna to be copied. Describe how the leading and lagging strands are synthesized. Describe how dna damage and mistakes in replication are repaired. Primary structure of nucleic acids is similar to primary structure of proteins. Dna & rna molecules have sugar-phosphate backbone that is created by phosphodiester linkage & sequence of 4 possible nitrogenous bases that can extend from it. Primary structure of dna has 2 components: backbone made up of sugar & phosphate groups of deoxyribonucelotides, series of nitrogen-containing bases project from the backbone. Secondary structure of dna & rna is different from secondary structure of proteins. Dna & rna don"t have alpha-helices and beta-sheets. Secondary structure of nucleic acid is formed by hydrogen bonding between nitrogenous bases hydrogen bonding stabilizes the secondary structure.
