BIOL 103 Chapter Notes - Chapter 22: Great Chain Of Being, Koelreuteria Paniculata, Carl Linnaeus
Document Summary
Change in the genetic composition of a population from generation to generation. The pattern of evolution can be seen from different disciplines of science (bio, geology, physics, chem) which are facts and observations about the natural world. The process of evolution consists of the mechanisms that produce the observed pattern of change. Greek philosophers suggested that life may have changed gradually over time. Aristotle viewed species as fixed but could be arranged in a scale of increasing complexity called the scala naturae. Carolus linnaeus (1707-1778) developed the binomial format for naming species and grouped similar species into categories. Darwin drew from the work of scientists studying fossils. Strata: a rock layer formed when new layers of sediment cover older ones and compress them. The fossils at a particular stratum showed what organisms populated the earth at that layer. Paleontology: study of fossils developed by georges cuvier.
