Document Summary
Topic 1: introduction to the nervous system: explain how the structure of the nervous system determines behaviour. Compare and contrast the divisions of the nervous system (cns vs. pns, etc. : nervous system is a combination of several subsystems, system of twos > things all come in twos, central nervous system (cns) Spinal cord: communicates with all the sensory organs and muscles, except those of the head, peripheral nervous system (pns) Includes cranial nerves and spinal nerves, which transmit sensory information from the body to the cns and transmit motor and other commands in the other direction, from the cns to muscles, glands, and internal organs. Skeletal nervous system: controls the various muscles (ex. leg muscles), relaying motor command from the brain, sensory or afferent, motor or efferent. Autonomic nervous system: controls involuntary" muscles (ex. heart, diaphragm) and many internal organs (ex. the viscera) especially important in maintaining homeostasis.
