Document Summary
Discuss whether it is possible to separate the influences of nature and nurture on development. At a general level, behavior has been viewed as arising from one of two possible origins: either you were born with it (nativism from the genes) or you gained it through experience (empiricism from the environment) According to nativism, certain abilities are hard wired or innate they are present at birth and not learned from experience. Empiricists on the other hand believe that we are born as blank slates and that all behavior results from our individual experiences. Does behavior come from genes or the environment. Genes affect the environment and the environment affects gene expression these factors interact at every level. Thus all behavior results from both nature and nurture. The nature/nurture debate has had considerable influence on psychology. Dna = in sexual reproduction, the genetic material from a male and a female combines through the union of a sperm and an egg.
