Document Summary

Rosenhan and seligman (1984) criteria for abnormal behaviour. Wanted to test reliability of psychiatric diagnoses. Conducted a field experiment where eight healthy people; five men and three women, all researchers and they tried to gain admission to 12 different psychiatric hospitals. Complained that they had been hearing voices. Voices were unclear, unfamiliar, of the same sex and said single words like empty or thud (only symptoms they reported) 7 of them were diagnosed as suffering from schizophrenia. After individuals admitted to psychiatric wards, they all said they felt fine and that they were no longer experiencing symptoms. For seven of them, schizophrenia was implied to come back. Rosenhan was not content with findings that normal ppl could be classified as abnormal, so decided to investigate if abnormal ppl could be classified as normal. Told staff at a psychiatric hospital that pseudo-patients would try to gain admittance.
