Document Summary

Defines the extent of a cell, separating intracellular from extracellular mainly made of phospholipids and smaller amount of glycolipids, cholesterol and other fats. Head is hydrophilic ( likes water) and uncharged tail made of 2 fatty acids that are hydrophobic (doesn"t like water) Lipids with attached sugar group, found on the outer membrane. Has polar region and non-polar region, stabilizes the membrane lowering membrane fluidity. Are responsible for most of the specialized membrane functions, communicated with outer environment. Firmly inserted into the lipid by-layer can be involved in transport, carriers, enzymes, receptors etc. Not embedded in the membrane, attached to integral proteins. Describes the fuzzy sticky, carbohydrates-rich area at the cells surface. Other cells recognizes other cells due to their specific glycocalyx. Cells are knit into tights communities tight junction: protein in membrane fuse together desmosome: anchoring junction (velcro) gap junction: communication junction between cells.
