BLG 10A/B Chapter Notes - Chapter 17: Bone Marrow, Abo Blood Group System, Buffy Coat
Document Summary
Blood cell formation is referred to as hematopoiesis: this occurs in the red bone marrow, which is composed largely of a soft network of reticular connective tissue bordering on wide blood capillaries called blood sinusoids. Diet: nutrients, especially iron, vitamin b12, folic acid, sulphur, be mindful of phytate and oxalate. Decreased availability of oxygen: kidney (and liver to a smaller extent) releases erythropoietin (epo"s, epo stimulates red bone marrow, enhanced epo increases rbc count, oxygen-carrying ability of blood rises. 2)platelets plug formation: injury to lining of vessel exposes collagen fibres, platelets adhere, platelets release chemicals that make nearby platelets sticky, platelet plug that temporarily seals the break in the vessel wall forms. Delivering oxygen from the lungs and nutrients from the digestive tract to all body cells. Transporting metabolic waste products from cells to elimination sites (to the lungs to eliminate carbon dioxide, and to the kidneys to dispose of nitrogenous waste in urine).
