Small group: collection of 3-12 people who assemble for a specific purpose. Problem-solving small group: small group formed to solve a problem. Leadership: ability to influence group members so as to help achieve goals of group. Implied leader: group member to whom other members defer because of their rank, expertise or other quality. Emergent leader: group member who emerges as a leader during group"s deliberations. Designated leader: person who is elected/appointed as leader when group is formed. Procedural needs: routine housekeeping actions necessary for efficient conduct of business. Task needs: substantive actions necessary to help small group complete assigned task. Maintenance needs: communicative actions necessary to maintain interpersonal relations. Responsibilities in a small group: commit yourself to the goals of your group. Hidden agenda: unstated individual goals that may conflict with group goals: fulfill individual assignments, avoid interpersonal conflicts, encourage full participation, keep the discussion on track. Five-step method for directing discussion in a problem-solving small group: define the problem.
