Reading 1: safe spaces vs brave spaces - a new way to frame dialogue around social. Diversity and justice by brian asao & kristi clemens. Foundation to having convo. s about diversity and social justice is establishing ground rules. Helps to be more respectful, sensitive and honest. Safe space = a place where ppl who are anxious about sharing opinions about controversial issues can open up. Instead of defending, ppl begin to retreat, deflect or discount. Solution: instead of falsely advertising that risk has been removed from the situation, alter lang. So that students are prepared to be brave enough to voice their opinions. Many who ended up at the front of the room felt persecuted b/c they couldn"t help that they were white/male/cis/straight/etc . Those ending at back of room said exercise reminded them of painful day-to-day life struggles. Almost all participants (both ends) said the activity made them uncomfortable and violated safe space ideals.
