Alcohol and violence in the lives of gang members. Belief that gangs are breeding ground for serious delinquency, transitory adolescent social networks leading to criminal organizations. Violence is a norm in gangs, and alcohol use is as well; gang life is governed by rules of masculinity (respect > ability to ght) and an emphasis on male bonding. Alcohol and partying can act as a way to maintain cohesion and group solidarity. Different cultures see drinking differently; latinos think it makes them macho, african. Americans think it makes them cool, chinese frown upon intoxication. Mechanism to mark boundaries between other gangs, certain drinking styles for each gang. Creates a ritualized context for ghting and violent confrontations, enabling mechanism. Gangs create rituals for drinking, such as after an initiation and at a funeral, left by grave to symbolize unity. Somebody"s gonna get their head kicked in tonight. Alcohol increases aggression in men, those at greatest risk are young men.
