Document Summary

3 phases to professional development: novice, experienced and mature. 1st level: focus on safety and make use of skills that help create external structure for young people and establish their authority as an adult. 2nd level: focus on young person or family, able to apply theory and be creative. 3rd level: rational and fully aware of and makes use of the self in interaction with children and youth. We develop through series of stages, initiated and characterized by transformative experiences. Transformative experience: event that becomes such an intense learning experience, our thinking, behaviour and perspective are dramatically changed. Transformative moments: influence our thinking about practice, remembered as defining moments in practice. Professional development evolves in interaction with others. First-order developmental change can lead to second-order developmental change over time. Never stop developing through our lives so we shouldn"t stop developing through our professional career.
