Time in chapter 15 lecture/text notes: art, drama, movement and music therapy. Cerebral cortex is divided into two hemispheres with specific unique qualities, right is more fully developed in childhood and processes emotions, imagination, fantasy, space, symbols and images, all of which are reflected in the art experience. Use of art experience without interpretation provides children with opportunities to express themselves. Discussions, presentations and interpretations may follow activities, especially with older children to add left brain and support hemispheric integration. Trauma, cognitive deficits, mental illness, brain injury and stress hamper flow of information between hemispheres; the use of art/drama/movement/music provide opportunities to utilize integrative process. Facilitators style in art-based activities is laissez-faire; allows children latitude in behavior/response, conduct unstructured self-directed play; but still take an active role in leading/behavior control. Facilitators don"t judge art experience or final product, provide atmosphere of acceptance and respect, provides optimum opportunity for personal growth.
