These days extended families are more for replacements of parental roles, instead of extra support. Less access to extended family issues within the family the family life cycle. Family life cycle is the name given to stages that family goes through. 8 stage model of traditional life cycle that remains useful today (duvall and miller: unattached young adult stage. Managing their resources (having enough food, residence, transportation) Establishing close peer relationships: establishment stage (married no children) Major task: establish their identity as a new unit. Making rules, defining roles in marriage, realigning rel. with friends and family. For lgbt / interracial couples: affirming identity within family of origin: new parent stage (infant to 3 years) Accommodate the infant: preschool stage (oldest child 3 to 6 years) Learning and applying effective parenting skills to interact with others: school-age stage (oldest child 6-12)
