Max steiner is more commonly known as the father of american film music. Steiner credited richard wagner (nineteenth-century german opera composer who died before film even existed) Wagner has been a source of inspiration for many famous composers (similarities between the scores can be found) Wagner suggested that drama was the greatest unifying artform. The challenge in unifying is the arts don"t typically mix. Two basic types of art : visual ( occupy space : painting, sculpture, photography) and. Wagner wanted control over all art forms to truly unify the production. Built his own theatre; the festival theatre at bayreuth temporal ( occupy time: literature, music, dance) Widened the space between the audience and stage using a double proscenium. Orchestra extended beneath the stage so the audience can"t see them. Detailed scenery was created for every scene. Eliminated box seats and created classless theatre ( continental seating)
