Document Summary

In april of 1927, the first broadcast was transmitted using a mechanical system developed by john logie baird. The broadcast featured a short act by a comedian named a. dolan, who appeared as no more than an outline on the screen, but garnered great immersion from viewers nonetheless. British tv experiments continued, although the audience was often limited to technicians and avid hobbyists. The quality of the image was exceedingly choppy, with just 30 vertical lines to create definition of the actor. As a result, odd tactics such as splashing an actor with paint were often resorted to in order to create greater definition. Over time, as the technology in britain developed, a high definition broadcast was transmitted in november of 1936. The screen had either 240 lines or 405 lines across the screen, lending a much improved visual quality to the picture.
