HRM Chapter 1 What is Human Resource Management? ­ Leadership and Management of people within an organization using systems,  procedures, methods and processes that enable employees to optimize their  contribution to organizational goals ­ It supports and enables org to meet short and long term economics, socials,  and environmental goals. Strategic HRM ­ linked to the strategic needs of an organization and aims to integrate human  resource management strategies and systems to support the organization’s  overall mission, strategies and success  ­ linked to the strategic needs of an organization­ corporate, business &  functional levels ­ HR Strategies and tactics must be mutually consistent  ­ HR strategies need to be consistent with organizational priority  ­ Strategic HRM often enables an organization to anticipate a challenge or  problem and address it before it impacts the organization. 1. Proactive HRM ­ Occurs when HR problems or challenges are anticipated and strategic action  begins before it impacts the organization  ­ Decision makers anticipate problems and likely challenges and take action  before a problem exists. 2. Reactive HRM ­ Occurs when decision makers respond to HR problems/ challenges as they  arise ­ Decision makers respond to problems rather than anticipate them Step 2: Organizational Mission and Goals Analysis  The organization’s overall mission and goals guide the human resources  needed to fulfill the mission and goal  Goals such as productivity, organizational, efficiency, employee satisfaction,  efficiency, and ability to adapt will help to identify HR strategies Step 3: Analysis of Organizational Character and Culture  Human resource strategies should be formulated only after a careful loolk at  the organization’s character ­ Employees, objectives
