IND 400 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Fiber Bundle, Human Factors And Ergonomics, Anthropometry
Chapter 7
Ergonomics and Workstation Design Space Requirements
- Ergonomics and workstation design workstation layout
- Workstation layout determines the space requirements
- Manufacturing department:
1) Total space req = total of individual space requirements + contingency factor (a little
extra)
- Ergonomics- science of preventing musculoskeletal injuries in the workplace
- The study of workplace design and the integration of workers within the environment
▪ Considerations: employee size, strength, reach, cognition, survivability,
cardiovascular capabilities and CMI
▪ Safety and health considerations
- Ergon – meaning work and nomos meaning rules/laws
- Thus ergonomics- laws or rules of performing or doing work
- Ergonomics/ HF/ human engineering
- Ergonomics – considers human- work environment relationships
- Flexibility – accommodate for individual differences
- Modularity – unlimited configurations
- “Design the work or workstation so that the task fits the person rather than forcing the person
to fit the job”
- Anthropometrics- physical dimensions of the body – helps design workstation
- Bad workstation design-- costs in productivity, health, injuries and accidents
- The resulting workstation design is a drawing, normally a top view, of the workstation,
including the equipment, materials, and operator space.
The following information must be included in any workstation design:
1. Worktable, machines, and facilities
2. Incoming materials (material packaging and quantity must be considered)
3. Outgoing material (finished product)
4. Opeatos’ spae ad aess to euipet
5. Location of waste and rejects
6. Fixture and tools
7. Scale of drawing (see Figure 7–2)

Effectiveness is doing the right job. Efficiency is using the job right
- Eliiate jos that ae’t effetive
- Make effective jobs more efficient
- Be creative w the workstation design
