Power is the capacity of a person, team or org to influence others. *legitimate, reward & coercive mostly originate from the powerholder"s formal posn/ informal role vs. expert & referent originate mostly originate from powerholder"s characteristics. (exhibit 10. 2) The size of this zone & thus the magnitude of legitimate power increases w/ the level of trust in the power holder. People who value conformity & tradition, those in high power (accepts unequal distribution of power) vs. low power distance cultures tend to be more obedient to authority. Org"s culture influences willingness of employees to follow orders. Employees can also have legitimate power over bosses & co-workers through legal/administrative rights, & informal norms. Norm of reciprocity is a felt obligation & social expectation of helping someone who has helped you; a form of legitimate power b/c it"s an informal rule of conduct we are expected to follow.
