They look for innovative ways to produce and distribute desirable goods and services more efficiently. They create a drive for innovation rather than a reliance on standard products. There is the closed systems approach and the configuration framework. The distinction between closed and open systems: a closed system does not depend on the environment. Instead they are focused on the internal systems. The open system on the other hand, must interact with the environment outside to survive. The open system both consumes resources and exports resources to the environment. In an open system, inputs to the organizational system includes raw materials, employees, information, money. The transformational process changes these inputs into something of value that can be exported back to the environment. Outputs are products and services for customers, employee satisfaction, pollution, etc.
