Inflammatory bowel disease autoimmune disease that currently refers to two disorders of the gi tract (crohn"s disease and ulcerative colitis [uc]) characterized by idiopathic inflammation and ulceration. Both uc and crohn"s disease commonly occur during teenage years and early adulthood: second peak is in the fifties to seventies. Discovery of numerous gene variations suggests that ibd is a group of diseases (not just two) with multiple causes that produce similar types of mucosal destruction and thus manifest with similar symptoms. Ulcerative colitis (uc) is a chronic ibd characterized by inflammation and ulceration of the rectum and colon. Occurs at any age, peaks between ages of 15 and 25 years. Inflammation is diffuse: involves mucosa and submucosa, with alternate periods of, begins in the rectum and spreads proximally along colon in exacerbations and remissions continuous fashion area. Mucosa of rectum and colon is hyperemic and edematous in affected.
