Gustafon (2005) contends that transcultural nursing rests on broadly defined concept of culture that"s narrowly applied: focus is on individual identity within an understanding of culture that emphasizes similarities of experiences and simplifies differences. Culture is grounded in history, yet situated and constructed in current location, reflecting underlying power relationships. Focus on individuals when providing care reflects the dominant north american value and assumption of personal autonomy, which can deemphasize issues of power and oppressive systems. Almost exclusive focus on individuals has implications for chns, providing little or no guidance for addressing how we act as a community, the duties and obligations, and the mutual and disparate moral interests of individuals, families, and communities . Diversity refers to variety and differences of atributes among, between, and within groups. Focusing on diversity may result in reinforcing differences between groups when diversity is seen as linked to a fixed heritage.
