It can take years to conduct a study and publish results thus time may elapse between qualitative insights and formal quantitative testing of hypotheses based on those insights. Qualitative data is used to illustrate the meaning of quantitative descriptions. The illustrations clarify concepts to confirm the findings from the statistical analysis. Quantitative methods can demonstrate that variables are systematically related but may fail to provide insights about why they are related. The most ambitious application of mixed method research.
