PHL 366 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Human Beings In Buddhism, Existentialism, Jean-Paul Sartre
Document Summary
Jean-paul sartre - humanism of existentialism (part two) I think, therefore, i exist - descartes original claim. Absolute truth of consciousness becoming aware of itself. Every theory that takes man out of the moment when we becomes aware of himself is a theory which confounds truth. Views are probably, and a doctrine of probability is not bound to truth. To describe the probably, you have to understand what is truth. Before there can be any truth, there must be an absolute truth - something easily arrived at and accessible to everyone. Theory of absolute truth gives man dignity - the only theory that does not reduce man to an object. Effect of materialism is to treat every man as an object; an ensemble of determined reactions. We wish to establish the human realm as an ensemble of values distinct from the material realm. Subjectivity which we have claimed to be true is not a strictly individual subjectivity however.
