PHL 366 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: The Second Sex, Simone De Beauvoir, Eternal Feminine
Document Summary
Some would say she is a womb. Speaking of certain women, experts say they are not women at all (despite their physiological makeup) We are told that femininity is in jeopardy. Urged to be women, stay women, become women . Not every female is necessarily a woman; must take part in the reality known as femininity. Biological and social sciences no longer believe there are determined entities which define the characteristics of a woman, a jew, etc. Science considers characteristics as secondary reactions to situations. If there is no such thing as femininity today, it is because there never was. Women are human beings who are designated by the word woman . Should rather just be considered a human being. Easy to show that women are not men; but, both women and men are human. Abstract idea however; every human being is uniquely situated.
