Throughout much of human history, it seemed obvious that the brain wasn"t the prime location of our thoughts, memories, and emotions heart pounds quickly when people feel different emotions, while the brain seems to do little or nothing. Biological psychologists or neuroscientists study the relationship between the nervous system and behaviour. Neurons are brain/nerve cells, specialized for communication with each other. There are approximately 100 billion neurons, with 160 trillion connections between them. When the synaptic vesicle reaches the end of the axon terminal, it bursts, releasing neurotransmitters: neurotransmitters: chemical messengers that allow neuron to neuron communication, synapse: space between neurons through which neurotransmitters travel. Synaptic cleft: a gap into which neurotransmitters are released from the axon terminal. Glial cells: glial = glue , cells that are plentiful in the brain (1:1 ratio with neurons, clear away debris, two main types: astrocytes and oligodendrocytes.
