Document Summary

Neuroscience is the study of the nervous system. Neuroimaging: techniques that allow for studying brain acivity and structure by obtaining visual images in awake humans. Idenify brain regions that become acive under certain condiions. 1: provide images of what the brain itself looks like-structure of the brain. The neuron is the fundamental building block of the nervous system. Neurons have a cell body illed with cytoplasm that contains a nucleus. Neurons contain organelles that enable the cell to make proteins and other molecules. Neurons have specialized structures called dendrites and axons that are important for communicaion with other neurons. Dendrites extend like branches from the cell body to collect inputs for other neurons. Axons have a specialized region at the end called axon terminal. All neurons are covered by a membrane that surrounds the enire neuron. Nervous system contains a large number of cells called glia. Glia bufer the neurons by a factor of about 10 to 1.
