Understanding how children develop can improve: child-rearing, promote adoption of effective social policies about children and answer questions about human nature. There are many questions parents have when raising their kids i. e. walking early, reading etc. Parents often wonder how to deal with bad behavior spanking: alternatives: show sympathy, find other ways to deal with their anger, time-outs, turtle technique (deescalate anger by going into turtle position where they think about problem) Developmental scientists have ways to help us observe, describe and explain how child development works. 1. 2 historical foundations of the study of child development. Some of earliest developmental researcher were plato and aristotle of greece. Saw importance of raising children properly for long-term welfare of society. Plato: saw importance of discipline and self-control in child-rearing and education. They were interested in the nature vs. nurture debate. Aristotle agreed but thought child rearing should be individualized to each child.
