PSY 324 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Parasympathetic Nervous System, Sympathetic Nervous System, Autonomic Nervous System
Document Summary
Chapter 4 anatomy of the nervous system. The cerebral cortex is the largest/most prominent part of the mammalian cns. Although brain size varies among species, the overall organization is similar. Across mammalian species, the most constant structure (in terms of relative size) is the cerebellum. Pns = connections brain + spinal cord to the rest of the bod. Somatic nervous system contains axons that carry msgs from sense organs to cns and cns to muscles. Autonomic nervous system controls the heart, intestines, and other organs. Sympathetic nervous system = fight or flight increased breathing/heart rate + decreased digestion. Parasympathetic nervous system (e. g. craniosacral system) = rest and digest conserves energy. Goose bumps are associated with sympathetic nervous system. Otc drugs block parasympathetic activity (e. g. sinus fluids) increase heart rate + inhibit salvation/digestion. They increase activity of the sympathetic nervous system. Horizontal plane = mid-view of brain that is horizontally sliced in half (e. g. top-view)
